Can you tell us a bit about your music and yourself?

I am Cécile aka Pump­kin’, a 30-year-old rap­per from Brest and my first influ­ence was MC Sol­aar. When I was young, I was not one of the best but I showed endur­ance and worked hard to do my job which made me who I am today : an inde­pend­ent artist, com­mit­ted to Hip Hop cul­ture and DIY. Both in life and on stage I work closely with my part­ner Vin’S da Cuero, with who I foun­ded the label Men­ta­low Music in 2011. Since then I have released a lot of records, the new­est one being called Astro­naute which was released this month. I like being on stage, but I also enjoy the intim­acy of the cre­at­ing and being in a stu­dio. Music is a real ther­apy for me and a space of free­dom. I run writ­ing and rap work­shops to con­trib­ute to a dif­fer­ent image of rap, for shar­ing exper­i­ences and empower­ment. Which dif­fi­culties are you facing day by day as an artist?

Being an artist isn’t easy but that’s prob­ably good. The most dif­fi­cult thing for me is to juggle the dif­fer­ent hats: being an artist, man­ager, admin­is­trat­or of my asso­ci­ation, com­munity man­ager, respons­ible for the pro­duc­tion of our clips, sec­ret­ary, pro­ject man­ager, trans­lat­or, edit­or, press officer, book­er … In short, I am an indie artist in 2018. It’s dif­fi­cult to suc­ceed being effect­ive on all fronts by respect­ing timetables and small budgets without los­ing sight of the most import­ant thing: the artist­ic part. This requires a high capa­city of crazy adapt­ab­il­ity and a very rig­or­ous dis­cip­line. It’s very chal­len­ging but just as excit­ing. And because I have Vin­cent with me and I like what I do.

When I am on stage, people do not care if it’s been three weeks that you have not slept because you have too much work to do, fin­an­cial prob­lems or pain­ful peri­ods. They want a good per­form­ance. You are judged on the same cri­ter­ia as an artist with a major on his back.

Think­ing about your suc­cess stor­ies (or not) could you give us a little pre-view on what you’d like to share with the audi­ence at Slash?

I will humbly share my pas­sion­ate and hard­core slash­er exper­i­ence in the won­der­ful world of rap.

Peux-tu nous par­ler un peu de ta musique et de toi-même?

Je suis Cécile aka Pump­kin’. Rap­peuse trentenaire ori­gin­aire de Brest. Ma première influ­ence a été MC Sol­aar. Jeune, je n’étais pas la meil­leure mais j’ai per­sévéré et bossé dur jusqu’à en faire mon méti­er. Je suis une artiste indépend­ante, attachée à la cul­ture hip hop et au DIY. Je trav­aille en étroite col­lab­or­a­tion avec mon partenaire à la scène comme à la ville Vin’S da Cuero, avec qui nous avons fondé le label Men­ta­low Music en 2011. J’ai sorti plein de disques, le nou­veau s’appelle Astro­naute et vient tout juste de sortir. J’aime être sur scène, mais j’apprécie aus­si l’intimité du trav­ail de créa­tion et le stu­dio. La musique est pour moi une vérit­able thérapie et un espace de liber­té. J’anime des ateliers d’écriture et de rap pour con­tribuer à une autre image, pour la trans­mis­sion et l’empowerment. À quelles dif­fi­cultés es-tu con­frontée chaque jour en tant qu’artiste?

Être artiste n’est pas chose simple et c’est sans doute bien comme ça. Ce qui est le plus com­pli­qué pour moi c’est de jon­gler avec les différentes cas­quettes : artiste, man­ager, admin­is­tratrice de mon asso, com­munity man­ager, char­gée de pro­duc­tion de nos clips, secrétaire, chef de pro­jet, tra­ductrice, rédact­rice, attaché de presse, bookeuse jusqu’à il n’y a pas longtemps… Bref, une artiste indé en 2018. C’est dif­fi­cile de réussir à être efficace sur tous les fronts en respect­ant des rétro­plan­nings, avec des petits budgets, sans per­dre le vue le plus import­ant : l’artistique. Cela demande une capa­cité d’adaptabilité folle et une dis­cip­line très rigoureuse. C’est très éprouv­ant mais tout aus­si pas­sion­nant. Si je tiens, c’est parce que j’ai Vin­cent avec moi et que j’aime beau­c­oup ce que je fais. Sur scène, les gens se foutent de savoir si ça fait trois semaines que tu ne dors pas parce que tu as trop de taf ou des problèmes d’argent ou des règles douloureuses. Il veu­lent une bonne presta­tion, tu es jugée sur les mêmes critères qu’un artiste de grande mais­on de disque avec des gros moy­ens, des gens pour tout faire et des anti-douleurs qui marchent.

En pensant à vos réus­sites (ou non), pour­riez-vous nous don­ner un aper­çu de ce que vous aim­er­iez part­ager avec le pub­lic de Slash ?

Je vais part­ager humble­ment mon expéri­ence de slasheuse hard­core pas­sion­née dans le mer­veil­leux monde du rap game.
