Perception(s) of transition in the medina by Larie
This residency was made up of encounters, explorations, recordings and interviews in the medina, which enabled the artist to identify and build a trajectory for their creative project.
The piece is a combination of night-time and early-morning strolls through the medina. In their interviews, they chose to talk to women living in Medina, representing several generations. The idea is to find out from them how each of them has witnessed the passage of time and the transformations it has brought about.
As part of this project, Larie also wanted to collaborate with several artists on the creation of a symbolic piece entitled “All our yesterdays”. Beginning with the writing of a poem by a young poet, these verses were then used by a singer-songwriter to compose a song, which was carried by the voice of a young Medina resident. At the same time, two visual artists worked on a video to illustrate the sound installation. Two final recordings, one with a woman rapper and the second with a member of stambeli (Tunisian ritual where music, dance and trance combine to liberate bodies and minds, tracing its traditional origins to sub-Saharan Africa, now facing disappearing, particularly in the Medina of Tunis), completed the artist’s sound palette.
The final presentation to the public reveals a harmonious orchestration of multiple sound and visual layers, with a narrative dimension. Larie also play a part in the performance, reading a lyrical text entitled “Murmure” alongside a voice singing a Fairouz tune that echoes the ruins of the Tunis Medina with those of Jerusalem.
